The RAW agents play a crucial role in national security. The main job of a RAW agent is to collect intel about national threats and eliminate them before they stricks our nation. The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is India’s most efficient foreign intelligence agency.

What is RAW?

The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is the first full-fledged foreign intelligence Agency established in 1968 under the leadership of R.N. Kao. RAW directly reports to the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO).

What are the eligibility criteria for becoming a RAW officer or RAW agent?

The candidate has to full fill the following eligibility criteria in order to join RAW:-

• The candidate must be an Indian
• The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree from a reputed institute or university.
• RAW prefers the candidate with more than 20 years of experience in service but they do recruit freshers.
• The Candidate must have a good command on at least one foreign language.
• There is no age limit but the desirable age of the candidate must be below 56 years.
• The candidate must have good communication skills and strong memory power.

Field Officier:-

Field Officier is the most important part of RAW. The responsibility of a Field Officer is to collect critical information while working in the most difficult situations and keeping their identity secret at the same time. Field Officers are the heroes who continuously work for preventing attacks on our nation without getting any recognition. 

RAW recruits Field Officers from Police services, Intelligence agencies, military services, and other departments. There are different posts under the Field Officer category they are as follows.

• Field Officer
• Assistant Field Officer 
• Senior Field Officer
• Deputy Field Officer

Analyst:-

The Responsibility of an Analyst is to help the Field Officers by making strategies. As the name suggests they have to analyze the data collected by the Field Officers. The Analyst doesn’t have to go to the field his job is to work from the office desk.

• Junior Intelligence Officer
• Assistant Central Intelligence Officer
• Central Intelligence Officer

Experts:-

RAW also hires experts from different fields like hackers, computer programming, cyber security, forensic science, etc. This is also a very good option for the candidates who don’t work in any government department but are specialists in their field. 

Director:-

Being a Director of RAW is not an easy job he/she has a huge responsibility of the national security and safety of each and every RAW agent. To handle this kind of post you need to have a highly qualified Candidate, therefore the RAW director is recruited from the Indian Police Service (IPS) or 1st-grade officers from the Indian Government division.

How to become a RAW agent?

RAW doesn’t have any direct recruiting process until and unless you have some exceptional talent. RAW hire candidate mostly through government departments like Intelligence agencies, Armed forces, Police services, Administrative services, etc. We will discuss each of the ways to become a RAW agent in detail.

How to become a RAW agent through UPSC Civil Services Exam(CSE)?

As mentioned above RAW hire candidates from different Government departments and these departments hire candidates through UPSC Civil Service Exam. UPSC exam is considered the toughest exam in India. 

RAW recruits candidates who had already cleared the UPSC Civil Services Exam and opted for IAS(Indian Administrative Services), IPS(India Police Services), IRS(Indian Revenue Services), and IFS(Indian Foreign Services). The RAW’s selection Process Starts once the candidate has successfully completed his/her foundation course from Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. Then RAW conducts an interview in which the candidates have to go through a number of psychological tests. 

How to become a RAW agent through the Armed forces?

RAW hires most of its Field Officers from Armed Forces. Well RAW don’t conduct any selection rounds they directly recruit the candidates if they see the talent. So if want to take this way then you have to do something extraordinary during your service to grab the attention of RAW. For those who don’t know how to get into Armed Forces, you have to clear NDA (National Defense Academy) Exam to get a job in Armed Forces.

How to get into RAW through IB(Intelligence Bureau)?

According to me, this is the best option to go for since even if you don’t get into RAW you will not regret it much because the job profile of an IB Officer and A RAW agent is very similar. The only difference is RAW mainly focuses on foreign affairs while IB focuses on internal affairs.

RAW recruit candidate through IB if they see potential in them.

How to join IB?

To Join you have to clear Combined Graduate Preliminary Exam (CGPE) conducted every year by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). This exam is conducted in two-phase the first is Tier-1 and the second is Tier-2. Tier-1 examination contains four sections and all the question are objective. While Tier-2 examination compromises comprehension and the essay and its duration is one hour.

Only the candidates who have cleared the tier-1 examination with cutoff marks are eligible for the tier-2 examination. The candidates that have a clear tier-2 examination with cutoff marks have to go through the third and the last round which is the interview.
